Pediatric Psoriasis: A Rising Concern in Dermatology

The SDPA Annual Summer Dermatology Conference in San Diego buzzed with anticipation as a series of renowned experts took the stage to educate DermPAs on trends, best practices and other relevant topics during the June educational event. Amidst the 30th anniversary festivities, one topic drew our collective focus: the alarming rise of pediatric psoriasis.

Lisa Swanson, MD, FAAD, a respected pediatric dermatologist, led a pivotal session on this issue remotely. As I listened, my thoughts drifted to the young patients I’ve treated, their skin a canvas of discomfort and frustration.

Pediatric psoriasis cases are undeniably on the upswing, placing us PAs at the forefront of this emerging challenge. Dr. Swanson detailed the contributing factors: genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and enhanced diagnostic techniques. Her words served as a stark reality check for many in the room.

Swift identification and effective management are vital, given the deep-reaching physical and emotional toll on these young lives. Scanning the audience, I noticed the furrowed brows of my colleagues, mirroring my own concerns.

The exploration of treatment options proved enlightening. While topical steroids remain our primary tool, the recent approval of biologics for pediatric use marks a significant breakthrough. I recalled the dramatic improvement in a young patient after prescribing a biologic for the first time.

Dr. Swanson’s portrayal of psoriasis as a systemic disease was particularly eye-opening. Learning that psoriasis treatment could potentially reduce body-wide inflammation and even lower mortality rates underscored the gravity of our role as dermatology PAs.

As the session concluded, the room erupted into animated discussions. We traded stories of difficult cases and successful treatments, all eager to apply our newfound knowledge.

Leaving the conference hall, I felt invigorated with a renewed sense of purpose. While the rise in pediatric psoriasis presents a formidable challenge, it also offers an opportunity to significantly impact young lives. My mind raced with ideas for implementing these insights in my practice.
